This skill video demonstrates the steps for performing operations to safety and shut down an aircraft.
1. Gain access to aircraft flight deck or cockpit.
2. Locate throttle controls.
3. Gradually throttle back engines to Idle or Stop position.
4. On military aircraft, safety ejection seat(s)/module.
5. Shut off Fuel Valve switch(es).
6. Activate onboard fire protection systems by pulling Fire T-handles to discharge the on-board agent.
a. Pull handle up to shut off fuel
b. Rotate handle to discharge agent
NOTE: The onboard fire protection systems will flood the engines/nacelles with extinguishing agent extinguishing any fire there and causing the engine to shut down.
7. On military aircraft, safety aircraft weapons/armaments.
8. Shut off EPU/APU switch.
9. Shut off battery switch.
10. Locate batteries/battery compartment.
11. Open battery compartment with tool.
12. Disconnect batteries.
CAUTION: Main batteries on the Boeing 787 are located in two E&E bays; one forward and one aft. Boeing recommends that these Lithium-ion batteries “not” be disconnected or cables “cut” by firefighters. This is the responsibility of ground maintenance.
WARNING: Batteries give off explosive hydrogen gas and exploding batteries can injure or kill. ARFF personnel should wear safety goggles and acid resistant gloves and ventilate the area.
