Flock camera evidence drives Indian River County robbery trial

Описание: A new trial against two men accused of a 2023 robbery with a deadly weapon is heavily relying on data collected by automatic license plate readers, known as Flock cameras.

The retrial of Devian Bass and Daven Butler began on Wednesday morning, featuring the controversial surveillance technology as a vital tool for the prosecution.

Flock cameras, which automatically read license plates and identify vehicles as they pass by, are implemented by law enforcement agencies across the country, including in Indian River County. While supporters point to an increase in solved crimes, opponents like the ACLU argue that the widespread surveillance is a breach of privacy, tracking citizens' movements without probable cause.

Assistant State Attorney Katy Reid detailed how the technology played a crucial role in identifying the suspects.

“I anticipate the evidence from those phone calls is going to corroborate with the Flock data of the vehicle, along with the other location data. And what all of that is going to do is that's going to show you that Devin Butler was in the vehicle on the way to the robbery,” Reid stated.
