Dr Jawed Qureshi covers two worked examples on how to find support reactions in beams with point and distributed loads.
Imagine you have a simple wooden beam, like the ones you might see in a playground or on a bridge. Beams are used to support weight, like people walking on a bridge or a heavy load on a shelf. When something heavy is placed on a beam, it pushes down on the beam, and the beam has to push back to keep everything in balance.
There are two main types of reactions that happen when you put weight on a beam:
1. Support Reaction: Think of this as the beam's way of pushing back against the weight. If you have a beam resting on something, like a shelf on a wall or a plank on a table, the wall or table pushes up on the beam to keep it from falling down. This push from below is called a "support reaction."
o For example, if you place a heavy book on a shelf, the shelf pushes upward on the book to keep it from falling to the ground.
2. Load Reaction: This is the force exerted by the weight you put on the beam, pushing the beam down. So, if you have that same heavy book on a shelf, the book is exerting a force downward due to its weight.
o Think of it like this: The book is trying to pull the beam down, and the beam's support reaction (the shelf pushing up) is trying to stop it from falling.
These reactions are crucial for engineers and architects because they need to make sure that beams and structures can handle the loads placed on them without breaking or collapsing. By understanding these reactions, they can design beams and supports that are strong enough to keep everything stable and safe.
In summary, beam reactions are like a balancing act between the weight pushing down on a beam and the support pushing up to keep it in place. Engineers use this knowledge to create structures that can carry heavy loads safely.
