At the beginning of the 20th century, commercial fishing on the River Rhine was already in decline.
Increasing industrial pollution, heavy ship traffic, and changing economic conditions pushed traditional fishermen to the edge of survival.
This historical film documents Schocker fishing, a specialized net-based fishing technique developed for the strong currents of the Lower Rhine.
Used mainly at night, the method relied on precise cable systems, river knowledge, and manual skill rather than engines or automation.
The focus lies on eel fishing, one of the last viable forms of commercial river fishing in the region.
Eels, more resilient than other species, remained an essential source of income for fishing families even as salmon and sturgeon disappeared.
Filmed in the early 20th century, this documentary captures not only the fishing technique itself, but also the daily rhythm, risks, and adaptation strategies of river fishermen facing a rapidly industrializing world.
This is a story of manual labor, environmental change, and a disappearing way of life — preserved by Uncovered Past.
