Black Hawk — The War America Wanted to Forget

Black Hawk did not cross a border.
He went home.
And for that, the United States called it a war.

In 1832, Black Hawk and a small band of Sauk and Fox families returned to their ancestral land along the Mississippi River to plant crops where their people had lived for generations. They were not invading. They were not mobilizing for conquest.
They were trying to survive.
What followed became known as the Black Hawk War. But it was not a war in any traditional sense. It was a pursuit. A forced removal enforced by rifles. A campaign that turned refugees into enemies and civilians into targets.

This documentary tells the full story of Black Hawk: his refusal to accept a treaty he never recognized, his return to Illinois, the panic among settlers, the mobilization of militias, and the brutal chase that ended in the massacre at Bad Axe.
