'The Bells of Notre Dame' (Disney) in Manx, Scots Gaelic and Irish dialects

Another of my favourite Disney songs. Once again, I’m fairly pleased with how the translation has come together. But that’s where it ends. This video proves that i) I’m not a very good singer ii) I’m not very good at accents. Although I’m fairly familiar with the dialects of Irish and the differences between them, it’s very hard to imitate them.

For those who don’t know, modern Irish is considered to have three main dialects, corresponding to three of the ancient provinces of Ireland: Ulster, Connaught and Munster. These dialects sound very different. (There are also differences within the dialects, but these are much less obvious.)

The Gaeltachtaí (areas where Irish is still spoken as an everyday language) are mainly concentrated on the west coast: Donegal (Ulster); Mayo and Galway/Connemara (Connaught); and Kerry and Cork (Munster). There are also small Gaeltachtaí in Waterford (Munster) and Meath (in modern-day Leinster, but they speak Connaught Irish). However, thanks to the Revival, you can find Irish speakers all over Ireland and there are sizable Irish-speaking communities in Belfast and Dublin.

There are dialects in Manx and Scottish Gaelic too, for example, North and South Manx, and the various Hebridean dialects in Scottish Gaelic (to me, the southern islands sound more like Irish, whereas Lewis Gàidhlig has a more Scandinavian feel). However, the differences tend to be more subtle and I don’t know enough about them to attempt to represent them.
