In the 80s and early 90s the airwaves were filled with sweet songs from numerous artists. We didn't care how they looked or dressed; the focus was on the beautiful music they gave us.
In the mid 90s things changed really fast. Looks and image was pushed, females needed to be models, men needed to be fit, and the lyrics had to push sex.
We also saw the push by the big record labels to sell Hip Hop to the pop market. These artists got the bigger budgets, record deals, and air time.
Unlike Country music, Soul music wasn't slowly lost the heart and soul of RnB and has been confined to history like disco.
