CF-104D Starfighter 633: Supersonic Speed & Cold War Legacy
Nicknamed “The Widow Maker” and “The Missile with a Man in It,” the CF-104 Starfighter is one of the most iconic—and controversial—jets in aviation history. In this 8-minute video, explore the story of RCAF SN 12633, a dual-seat CF-104D that served across Canada and Europe before finding a permanent home at the KF Centre for Excellence.
Key Features:
Max Speed: 1550 MPH (Mach 2) at 40,000 ft
Wingspan: 21' 11" | Length: 54' 9"
Engine: Orenda J79-OEL-7
Service Ceiling: 58,000 ft
Built by Canadair in Montreal, this aircraft began its service in 1962 at Cold Lake’s 6 Strike/Recon OTU. It later served in France and West Germany during the height of the Cold War and even flew under the Royal Norwegian Air Force before its retirement in 1986.
After decades in private hands, CF-104D 633 was acquired by Barry LaPointe and made its final journey to Kelowna in 2023. Now proudly on display, it stands as a reminder of both innovation and risk in jet-age aviation.
Filmed at the KF Centre for Excellence in Kelowna, BC.
