Khalistan supporters in Auckland, New Zealand, organised a referendum seeking to carve out a sovereign state from India’s Punjab. The event was led by Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), a Khalistani separatist group. This is not the first time SFJ has organised such referendums. Similar votes have been held in other countries, including Canada, the United States, Italy, and Switzerland. In 2021 and 2022, two Khalistan referendums were conducted in the UK. Canada hosted two votes in 2022 and 2023, while Australia saw one in 2023. The United States has also hosted multiple such votes.  They are all Five Eye countries. The Five Eyes, also known as FVEY, is an alliance comprising intelligence agencies of the US, the UK, Canada, New Zealand and Australia. On Sunday, hundreds of Khalistan supporters gathered in Auckland to cast their votes. According to the group, 37,000 votes were cast. During the event, the Khalistanis raised slogans against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The New Zealand government stated it is "aware of the so-called referendum" and reaffirmed its respect for India’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
