In the late 19th century Dutch East Indies, Captain Hanson readies his ship, the Batavia Queen, for a daring salvage mission to recover a sunken vessel rumored to be carrying a fortune in rare pearls—its location revealed by his mistress, Laura, the widow of the ship’s former captain. As tensions rise aboard, Hanson is forced by a government agent to transport a volatile group of convicts, even as the wreck lies perilously close to the rumbling volcano of Krakatoa—where Laura’s young son remains in the path of impending disaster.
