How is it Done? Double Interview "Joker" and "Jasper"; Air Battle Management at Frisian Flag

"Joker" is the supervisor of Frisian Flag during the exercise and is responsible for organizing the whole exercise. He is responsible to make sure that all participants get their training that they need here. "Joker" is flying the F-16 for 12 years now and he is currently flying at Volkel Air Base at the 312 Squadron. This airbase is the last remaining F-16 base in the Netherlands.

In the role as mission commander, he is responsible for making sure that the general intent and the plans for the day are executed. He has assets in which he can employ them and make sure that the targets that need to be destroyed are destroyed. Next to that he needs to make sure And that the aircraft which fly these sorties will be protected. It is the mission commander's task to coordinate all the aircraft and to make sure the mission gets done. In the morning, the planning is started for the afternoon mission, while the planning for next morning mission is done in the afternoon. Here you gather all your experts from each nation and then you start brainstorming on how we can use what we have to overcome the problems that we face during this mission.

A mission is successful when all participants come home, but in war time scenarios that we are practicing that is not always possible. And if the objectives that were set are met, then we call the mission a success; preferable with everybody back home safe. No major new lessons were learned, as "Joker" participated already in several Frisian Flag exercises. It is always good to see the interaction between the nations and to understand how their tactics work compared to ours. And how we can talk on the radio as sometimes the accents are a bit different; that is the exposure we want to give to the pilots on which they can train here to be ready for the real war if needed.

The experience is mixed in this exercise. Some younger pilots just came from the US for their training and they are flying today with some generals that are very experienced pilots. It is a good training for everybody, especially for the young pilots that have not done this before and they will learn the most. But even the experienced generals can still learn.
