Iran: Trump threatens ‘obliteration’ or takeover of Kharg Island

Then, hours later, Trump threatened to ‘obliterate’ the island, as well as Iran's oil wells, energy facilities and desalination plants - something experts say would be a war crime.

He wants a deal before 6 April and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz.

Why is Trump focused on Kharg Island?

Tiny, very rocky, but also strategically important, 90 per cent of Iran's oil exports pass through it.

Losing control of it would be a major economic blow to Iran, especially now it has effectively closed the Strait of Hormuz - removing the competition and driving up oil prices which have now hit $116 per barrel.

In the UK, Prime Minister Keir Starmer held a meeting with energy, shipping and banking bosses to discuss the economic fallout and find ways to protect British citizens from the rising prices.
