Lagos, the economic capital of Nigeria produces up to 750kt of plastic waste per annum, most of which end up on the street, in gutters and in the Atlantic Ocean.
Lack of adequate waste management system creates an opportunity to cost effectively aggregate collection and sorting of plastic waste at micro-level while having a significant social and environmental impact.
The Waste-2-Chemicals Nigeria project seeks to achieve three key objectives: Design and deploy a scalable model to aggregate and sort at micro level plastic from the streets of Lagos, leverage off the shelf cost-effective pyrolysis technology to regenerate original crude oil content from existing plastic waste into a valuable feed, and enable a circular economy by swapping the feed against compatible cracker feeds that can be re-engaged in BASF value chains (LPG or Naphtha).
Traceability of upstream collection and sorting of plastic wastes will allow for mass balance certificates to be generated and transferred to final products manufactured from feeds generated from this process.
