(5 Jun 2012) A US envoy to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has challenged Iran to disprove suspicions that it worked secretly on nuclear arms by throwing open a military site to a probe by UN inspectors.
Robert Wood spoke on Tuesday to the 35-nation board of the IAEA and afterwards called on Iran to "open the Parchin site to the IAEA and to do it now."
According to Wood, satellite images reveal that Iran is trying to sanitise the Parchin military site southeast of Tehran.
He also urged Tehran to shut down a fortified bunker used to enrich uranium to a level that can allow the radioactive substance to quickly be turned into the core of nuclear arms.
The envoy further stated that he isn't very optimistic about the outcome of the talks in Vienna on Friday between the IAEA and Iran saying that "we have seen this movie many times before with Iran."
Iran promised that there would be no obstacle to reaching an agreement at the upcoming talks the with UN nuclear watchdog on Friday.
Tehran says all of its atomic activities are geared toward making nuclear fuel or medical research.
But international concerns have grown because of Iran's uranium enrichment activities.
The IAEA says it has mounting evidence that the Islamic Republic has secretly worked on a nuclear arms programme, something Tehran denies.
Iran's chief IAEA delegate Ali Asghar Soltanieh is expected to give his own statement on Wednesday.
