“Smoke on the Water” is one of the most iconic rock songs ever recorded by the legendary British rock band Deep Purple. Built around one of the most famous guitar riffs in rock history, created by guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, the song tells the true story of a dramatic fire that destroyed the Montreux Casino in Switzerland in December 1971. The band had travelled there to record their new album when the casino caught fire during a concert by Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention, forcing Deep Purple to find another place to record.

The song later appeared on Deep Purple’s classic album Machine Head, and it quickly became a defining anthem of hard rock. With Ian Gillan’s powerful vocals, Jon Lord’s distinctive organ sound, Roger Glover’s driving bass and Ian Paice’s precise drumming, “Smoke on the Water” became a staple of rock radio and live performances around the world. The unforgettable riff has also made the song one of the first many guitarists learn when they start playing.

Teksten fortæller den virkelige historie om den dramatiske brand, der ødelagde Montreux Casino i Schweiz i december 1971.
