STORYLINE
Aid workers on Friday delivered a shipment of rice to families still grappling with food shortages in flood-hit areas of Southern Nepal.
The Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS) reported that almost a month after the start of the monsoon season thousands of people were homeless and many were ill due to lack of food and proper shelter.
Those suffering the most were children and the elderly.
AP Television footage from Nepalgunj, a small town on the southern plains, showed villagers carrying belongings and struggling across flooded rivers.
As bags of rice and other food arrived at the village, dozens of people gathered around to collect what they could.
Scores of people die each year in the Himalayan nation during the rainy monsoon season.
Many are killed by landslides in the mountainous areas, or by flooding in the southern plains.
This year's death toll in Nepal alone has reached 105 since June, according to aid workers.
Torrential monsoon rains in the past several weeks across much of northern India, Bangladesh and Nepal have sent rivers over their banks, submerging villages and farmland, killing hundreds of people and stranding some 19 (m) million more.
