David describes a person who is blameless inside and out, who speaks truth, does no harm, remains loyal to God, keeps their word even at great cost, and refuses to exploit others for personal gain.

As the psalm presses in, Nathan explains that Psalm 15 is meant to humble us, not reassure us. General obedience is not enough. Selective obedience is not enough. Even sincere effort is not enough. God’s standard requires perfect, lifelong obedience. When we honestly assess ourselves, the weight of God’s law should feel crushing.

But that crushing weight prepares us for good news. Nathan points to Jesus Christ as the only one who truly fulfills Psalm 15. Jesus lived a blameless life, perfectly obeyed the Father, endured suffering without sin, and kept His commitment to save sinners even at the cost of the cross. He not only paid the penalty for our sin, but also fulfilled the righteousness God requires.

Because Christ ascended to the Father and entered God’s presence on our behalf, His righteousness can be credited to us by faith. God does not simply forgive our debt, He clothes us in Christ’s perfection. Now, through the Holy Spirit, believers themselves become God’s dwelling place. We are not saved by our blamelessness, but we are changed to grow in Christlike character because Jesus has already entered God’s place for us.
