In classical or neoclassical architecture an order defines a column. A column is made up of a shaft, base, and capital There are 5 major orders and they are easily recognizable and distinguished by their proportions and profiles.
The 5 orders include the Doric, Ionic, Corinthian, Tuscan, and Composite. The Doric order is part of the 3 Ancient Greek orders along with the Ionic, and Corinthian Order. The Tuscan and Composite columns are part of the Roman orders. The 5 Orders are deeply discussed in the Canon of the 5 Orders of Architecture by Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola.
