(12 Jul 2021) Hundreds of Filipinos marched in front of the Chinese Consulate on Monday to mark the five-year anniversary of the U.N.'s permanent Court of Arbitration's decision upholding the Philippines territorial rights on the South China Sea.
An international tribunal ruled unanimously in 2016 that there is no legal basis for China's "nine-dash line" claiming rights to much of the South China Sea.
The protesters called for China to respect the Philippines' landmark triumph before the Arbitral Tribunal and carried photos of the late President Benigno Simeon "Noynoy" Aquino III to commemorate his "legacy of patriotism" on the West Philippine Sea.
The protesters said Aquino's image is now a powerful symbol of the Filipino people's brave defense of the West Philippine Sea.
The panel of legal experts in The Hague said that any historic rights to resources that China may have had were wiped out if they are incompatible with exclusive economic zones established under a U.N. treaty.
China's claims to most of the South China Sea overlap with those by the Philippines and four other governments.
Despite that, tensions have eased since Rodrigo Duterte became the Philippine's president in 2016 and took steps to thaw once-frosty relations Beijing.
