In a 2020 study conducted by AAA, automotive researchers found that over the course of 4,000 miles of real-world driving, vehicles equipped with active driving assistance systems (ADAS) experienced some type of issue every 8 miles, on average. So while ADAS was a step in the right direction, today’s systems are imperfect and unreliable.
Building on the strengths of our Iris lidar, Luminar is developing an integrated hardware and software solution that enables Proactive SafetyTM, which surpasses traditional ADAS capabilities because it provides the vehicle with higher-confidence detection, faster and farther than camera and radar, enabling proactive collision avoidance at much higher speeds.
Proactive SafetyTM has the potential to make consumer vehicles uncrashable without having to remove the human driver from the equation.
**The test was performed in daylight on July 26, 2021, at a track outside of Ingolstadt, Germany. It shows a car (Lexus) that we equipped with a Luminar sensor operating our latest Perception software. The Luminar-equipped car is able to avoid a collision with a moving test-dummy pedestrian while two other ADAS-equipped vehicles are not. The other vehicles in the video are Tesla Model X with Autopilot (Tesla’s brand name for their SAE Level 2 Assisted Driving feature) and Audi A5 with SAE Level 2 Active Safety, Adaptive Cruise Control, and Lane Keeping Assist features. Each of the cars in this test operated with a driver behind the wheel, starting from a distance of 120m and traveling at various speeds up to a top speed of 80km/h.
