Aconcagua is an adventure game for the original PlayStation, released exclusively in Japan in 2000. This unique title combines survival elements, puzzle-solving, and narrative-driven gameplay, set against the backdrop of a harrowing mountain disaster. You play as Japanese journalist Kato, who, alongside a small group of survivors, must navigate the treacherous terrain of Mount Aconcagua in the fictional country of Meruza, located between Argentina and Chile. The country is currently undergoing political turmoil as the result of an independence movement. The movement has split Argentina in half, and a 33-year-old activist named Pachamama goes on a flight as part of a politically motivated independence tour.
During the flight, a terrorist detonates a time bomb, which causes the plane to crash near Aconcagua's peak. Only five passengers survive the crash. With limited resources and dangerous conditions, the survivors face not only the mountain but also a mysterious group intent on stopping them. The goal of the game is to go down the mountain and bring Pachamama safe to her people, to proclaim her as the president of the nation and avoid a possible civil war.
GAMEPLAY: Aconcagua is primarily a point-and-click adventure with light survival and puzzle-solving elements. Players control Kato as they guide the survivors, each of whom has unique skills that are essential for overcoming obstacles, like scaling cliffs, treating wounds, or fixing equipment. The game relies on thoughtful collaboration, making you manage resources, delegate tasks, and make decisions that affect the group’s survival. Puzzles are intuitive and story-driven, although some require precise timing or coordination, which can be challenging. There’s also a strong narrative element with occasional cutscenes that immerse you in the mystery behind the crash and the shadowy antagonists who are after the survivors.
GRAPHICS AND SOUND: For its time, Aconcagua boasts impressive visuals, with detailed environments that make the mountain setting feel intense and foreboding. Characters are well-designed, and the game’s cinematic cutscenes enhance the tension and drama. The soundtrack is atmospheric, using subtle melodies and sound effects that fit the game’s suspenseful tone, adding weight to the life-or-death stakes.
PROS:
After 22 years it was subtitled into English and Spanish
The interaction in the game is similar to Resident Evil
Engaging story with survival and mystery elements
Unique character-based puzzles and teamwork mechanics
Cinematic cutscenes and strong atmosphere
CONS:
Gameplay can be slow-paced, which may not appeal to all players
Occasional difficulty spikes with precise timing requirements
OVERALL: Aconcagua is a hidden gem in the PlayStation library, offering a distinctive, story-driven experience that combines survival and puzzle-solving in a high-stakes setting. Although only available in Japanese, it’s still worth exploring for fans of adventure games and survival narratives. Its gripping storyline, atmospheric design, and character-driven puzzles make Aconcagua a memorable and unique entry on the PS1 platform.
