Castilla-La Mancha is an autonomous region of Spain in accordance with the Statute of Autonomy that governs it. It consists of the 919 municipalities included in the provinces of Albacete, Ciudad Real, Cuenca, Guadalajara and Toledo. Its capital is the city of Toledo lies the Junta de Comunidades de Castilla-La Mancha autonomous self-government peak body. The seat of the Tribunal Superior de Justicia de Castilla-La Mancha is situated in the city of Albacete.
Castilla-La Mancha is located in the heart of the Iberian Peninsula, occupying most of the southern sub-plateau, bordering the north with Castilla y León and Madrid, Extremadura to the west, the east by Aragon and Valencia , and south by the Region of Murcia and Andalusia.
The Community autonomy is the third largest in Spain, with an area of 79,409 km2, which represents 13.6% of the total mainland, with a population of 2,115,334 inhabitants (11.00% foreigners), which experienced significant increase of the same during the past years. Life expectancy reached 82.74 years on average, the, one of the highest in Spain.
Geographically, within the Community are clearly differentiated two types of landscapes: the plains and mountains. The mountainous region of Castile-La Mancha in part bordering the limits of the Community, and are the Central System, which includes the Sierra de Ayllon, Ocejón and Somosierra in northern Guadalajara, Sierra de San Vicente in the province deToledo , the Iberian covering the provinces of Cuenca and Guadalajara, the Sierra de Alcaraz and Segura in Albacete, the foothills of Sierra Morena entering Ciudad Real (Sierra Madrona), and the Toledo Mountains which extend between the provinces of Ciudad Real and Toledo. The plain dominates the rest of the territory, as nearly 80% of the regional area not exceeding 1,000 meters above the sea level.
The vast plain of La Mancha, a large natural region that spans most of the provinces of Ciudad Real, Albacete, Toledo and Cuenca, joins The Alcarria, covering the provinces of Guadalajara and Cuenca.
The main rivers that run through the Community are the Tagus and the Guadiana which flows into the Atlantic, and the Júcar and Segura, who belong to the Mediterranean.
In addition, Castilla-La Mancha has a rich artistic and natural heritage, among them the two cities declared by UNESCO as World Heritage (Toledo and Cuenca) or 278,230.784 acres devoted to natural protected areas (national parks , natural reserves, micorreservas, ...) that are spread throughout the regional.
The economic reality castellanomanchega has traditionally been marked by the heightened role of the primary sector, although still occupies a prominent place has been gradually displaced by the service sector as the engine of the economy.
In infrastructure, Castile-La Mancha in 2009 had about 1,800 kilometers of roads (motorways or freeways), 670 kilometers of AVE (first community to have all their capitals connected to high speed), and two airports (Albacete and Ciudad Real).
The history of Castilla-La Mancha is rooted in time. Iberians, Romans, Visigoths, Muslims and Christians have lived and left their mark in the Community, marking the character of its people.
Castilla-La Mancha agreed to self-government constituted as an Autonomous Community on August 16, 1982 with the publication of its Statute of Autonomy (Law 9/1982 of 10 August) in the Government Gazette, as amended in 1991, 1994 and 1997. In 2007 it was agreed a new proposal to introduce changes which finally came into force.
