Tommy Crane may have grown up in Saint-Louis, then lived in New York, but it is in Montreal that the drummer seems to have really settled down. Proof of this is the album entitled The Isle, which is directly inspired by his adopted city, and for which the drummer, accompanied by his friend David Binney on saxophone (a guy from Los Angeles who loves our metropolis just as much), wrote instrumental pieces with titles such as The Plateau, Lazy Day Jarry, Canal Moms, Snow in Verdun, etc. The two musicians are supported by some of the big names in Montreal's indie rock-jazz-alt-improv-underground scene: Dave Gossage (flute), Thomas Carbou (guitar), Parker Shper (piano), Levi Dover (bass/double bass). The Isle, although supported by these lights of improvisation, sometimes ardent, even heart-wrenching, is bathed in a soft light and a relaxed, laid-back energy.

It's a bit because Montreal has a beneficial effect on Crane and his friend Binney. I talked about the album, Montreal, and other things with Tommy Crane. Tommy Crane a beau avoir grandi à Saint-Louis, puis vécu à New York, c’est à Montréal que le batteur semble avoir posé ses pénates de façon vraiment enracinée. À preuve, cet album intitulé The Isle (l’île) qui est inspiré directement pas sa cité adoptive, et pour laquelle le batteur accompagné de son ami David Binney au saxophone (un gars de Los Angeles qui aime autant notre métropole) ont écrit des pièces instrumentales qui portent des titres tels The Plateau, Lazy Day Jarry, Canal Moms, Snow in Verdun, etc. Les deux musiciens sont appuyés par des pointures de l’indie rock-jazz de Montréal : Dave Gossage (flûte), Thomas Carbou (guitare), Parker Shper (piano), Levi Dover (basse/contrebasse). The Isle, bien que porté par ces lumières de l’impro parfois ardente, voire déchirante, est baigné d’une lumière douce et d’une énergie relaxe, décontractée.

C’est un peu parce que Montréal a un effet bienfaisant sur Crane et son ami Binney. J’ai parlé de l’album, de Montrés et d’autres choses avec Tommy Crane. L’occasion parfaite de mieux connaître cet artiste qui est arrivé ici un peu avant la pandémie, qui s’y est installé définitivement et qui constitue déjà l’un des artistes les plus recherchés l’écosystème montréalais.
