This video shows how to diagnose and fix common problem of an old CD-player. Common thing is that sled (hatch / tray) is not moving correctly and it's making rough grinding noise or other bad noises. The sled may struggle to move or not move at all. Cleaning and lubricating all moving parts and changing the drive belt is usually enough to make things work again.
Problems are usually caused by old loosened belt, which is slipping and this way mechanical movements are not performed completely. Another thing is that some moving parts may be dirty and stuck, in other words dirty gears and sliding surfaces will resist mechanical movements.
Device I'm working on, is Philips CD-732 from the 90's and it's part of a bigger rack-stereo system. Most same era CD-players have similar type of design and basic components. Work your way inside the device carefully so that you can possible hidden screws and plastic clips and other fastening features.
Side note:
I'm a mechanical engineer, but what it comes to electronics, I'm mostly self-learned. Do not try to fix your electronic devices if you're not sure what you're doing. If you handle electrical devices carelessly, you may get electrical shock or cause malfunction to the device.
