Goals of Care are designations used by healthcare providers to describe general aims of your health care and the preferred location of that care. They guide your healthcare team to provide timely care that is both medically appropriate and reflects your values and wishes. There are three general approaches to goals of care: resuscitative care, medical care, and comfort care. Resuscitative care includes intensive medical and surgical interventions if needed to prolong life. In medical care, the goal of care is to prolong life but without the use of intensive medical treatments. Comfort care focuses on quality of life by relieving symptoms and maximizing comfort. For more information, speak to your healthcare provider. (Updated Nov 2013)
