Since the dawn of the preservation, heritage railways all across Britain have made an annual tradition of running Santa Specials. Seasonal services where children and their families can take a train ride to meet Father Christmas. Such events are a staple of multiple heritage lines, but in recent years, some railways have offered a range of other Yuletide trips, such as the 'Train Of Lights' or 'Santa At The Station' and now, 'The Polar Express'.
Based on the cherished 1985 children's book and 2004 film adaptation, visitors can personally believe the magic of the story on their own fun and festive journey to the North Pole. Along the way, they'll encounter a lively conductor, some hot-stepping hot chocolatiers, a mysterious hitchhiker and the star of the show: Santa Claus. Pulled by a majestic steam locomotive with a happy band of helpers on board, 'The Polar Express' is the most magnificent Christmas adventure in the land, and as more and more UK lines begin to introduce this seasonal service, just one question remains: Well, you comin'?
Having previously operated bog-standard 'Santa Specials', the Wensleydale Railway debuted the event last year to overwhelmingly positive reviews. Now back again for 2021, the event was a complete sellout, with over 44,000 tickets being purchased across five weeks of non-stop shows. However, instead of Pere Marquette 1225, LMS Stanier Black 5MT 45407 'The Lancashire Fusilier' would be taking charge of the express, courtesy of Ian Riley and the East Lancashire Railway. The services would be top-and-tailed, with BR Class 33 'Crompton' 33035 leading from Leeming Bar up to Constable Burton, before returning behind the 'Black Five'.
I visited on Tuesday 21st December. Although not quite as Arctic as the North Pole, North Yorkshire's weather wasn't much better; being dull, damp and bitterly cold, although this did result in some spectacular steam effects. The train is seen from various points between Leeming Bar and Constable Burton. The static shots at Leeming Bar were taken with special dispensation from the railway. Please be aware that the station is closed to the general public throughout the remainder of the event.
I hope you all enjoy the video. Huge thanks to Jordan Poole and the staff and volunteers of the Wensleydale Railway for their help in making this video. Thanks also to Ethan Beadle of PVRS Productions, who accompanied me on this visit, as well as Gimbal Air for their spectacular drone footage. Have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
