Pityriasis versicolor is a common fungal infection that leads to the appearance of white patches on the skin. This condition is caused by an overgrowth of a type of yeast called Malassezia, which is naturally present on the skin. Under certain conditions, such as hot, humid weather, excessive sweating, or an oily complexion, this yeast can proliferate excessively.
When Malassezia overgrows, it interferes with the normal pigmentation of the skin by producing substances that inhibit melanin production. This results in the development of small, discolored patches that are often lighter than the surrounding skin. These patches typically appear on the chest, back, neck, and upper arms, and they may be more noticeable after sun exposure, as the affected areas do not tan as the rest of the skin does.
The condition is not contagious and can be treated with antifungal medications, which help to reduce the yeast growth and gradually restore normal skin color. However, it may take some time for the pigmentation to even out, even after the infection is cleared.
