Yellow or cream- which is Shea butter? And, can it be used to moisturize and condition my locs?
The yellow butter is really an african butter akin to petroleum jelly. This butter is great for sealing the moisture in skin. If applied to locs, you would have to wash it out completely with a strong shampoo because it will repel water - its job is to loc out any kind of moisture. This African butter is also good as a hair pressing grease for natural hair that needs to keep hair and humidity and moisture away.
Use the white butter, also known as shea butter as a sealant for locs. Be sure to apply a very thin veneer. A little goes a long way.
It is best to use free trade white and yellow butters. The ones sold on the street corners MAY contain other nuts/material. It is not necessarily a bad thing, but you really won't know what you are paying for!
