Why do Catholics chalk their doors on Epiphany?
Each year, many Catholic families mark their front door with blessed chalk. The mark we write includes the number of the new year and three holy letters.
So what are the letters?
The letters we write are the first three letters of each of the names of the Magi, who visited the holy family at the birth of Jesus.
The Magi's names are Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar so we write the letters C M B. those letters are also in a Latin prayer meaning, May Christ bless this house.
So, the mark is written like this, first the two numbers of the year, 20!
Then the letters of the Magi, C M B.
And then finally the last numbers of the year, 26!
This joyful tradition invites God’s blessing on our homes and all who enter throughout the year, reminding us that just as the Magi welcomed Christ, we are called to welcome Him into our lives every day.
So this Epiphany, grab some chalk, gather your family, and bless your home this year!
