Nicaragua is a country know for lakes and volcanoes which makes it a fantastic travel destination for backpackers and holidays. Colonial cities like Granada and Leon are great to wander around while looking at the architecture. Surfing can be done in Popoyo for the more advanced among us or for the beginners there is Remanso beach next to San Juan del Sur. The island Omotepe has 2 volcanoes: Conception and Maderas. Challenging volcanoes to climb but fun nonetheless (takes around 8 hours up and down).
Nicaragua, compared to the surrounding countries, is a fairly cheap country. For 3 hour bus rides you can pay as cheap is 2 dollars. Another great way to travel is hitchhiking, the people of Nicaragua are kind and always helpful to give you a ride. Expect to pay for food around 3 dollars a meal.
We traveled for around 1 month and we can highly recommend it! Just be careful with drones if you have one, they are very strict at the moment and don't allow any. Hopefully this changes in the future.
