Around 150 olive ridley sea turtles have been found dead along the Dokulapadu beach in Vajrapukotturu mandal of Srikakulam district, raising serious concerns about marine conservation on the Andhra Pradesh coast. The shocking incident occurred during the peak nesting season of olive ridley turtles, making the loss even more alarming for wildlife experts and environmentalists. Local residents have attributed the deaths to harmful fishing practices, especially the use of squid nets, and the growing menace of plastic pollution in the sea, which often leads to turtles getting trapped or ingesting plastic waste.

The Forest Department usually undertakes special measures during the December–January nesting season to protect olive ridley turtles and their eggs. Following the incident, members of Sneha Kalamandali, a local environmental organisation, carried out the burial of the dead turtles near the coastline as per ecological guidelines. Nature lovers and local representatives have urged the government to strengthen monitoring of fishing activities, strictly regulate destructive nets, and intensify anti-plastic drives to ensure safer nesting and long-term protection of these endangered marine species.
