HPN-SSH is a soft-fork of OpenSSH, the predominant implementation of the SSHv2 protocol, focused on maximizing the bulk data transfers across a wide range network paths. By optimizing receive buffers, improving cipher performance, and other tunings HPN-SSH can achieve throughput rates of more than 8Gbps across wide area networks on a single stream with full encryption. HPN-SSH is cross compatible will all SSHv2 compliant implementations and can provide performance gains when used with these implementations. Because HPN-SSH is fully compliant it can be used as a high performance alternative to ssh wherever you might use OpenSSH. This talk will introduce HPN-SSH, discuss how we normalize application and TCP receive buffers, our implementation of parallelized symmetric key encryption ciphers, common usage scenarios, and future work.
Chris Rapier: Over Chris’s 29 year career at the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center, he has largely focused on issues related to the performance, monitoring, and diagnosis of data transport over high speed networks. He approaches this from multiple angles including how applications interact with the network, analysis of network and TCP stack metrics, and OS/stack interactions. Current areas of research include high performance data transfer tools and the automatic identification of sub-optimal bulk TCP flows using AI. The end goal of all his work is to improve the way in which networks support the process of scientific discovery.
