In this session, Jamie Sabbach, Principal of 110% in Salida, Colorado and a Friend of Strong Towns, joined the conversation to discuss how cities can build anti-fragile parks and recreation systems.
The conversation explored a wide range of questions from members. Participants discussed the politics of large recreation investments like aquatic centers, the importance of planning for long-term maintenance, and the tension cities face when competing with neighboring communities for amenities.
We also talked about how residents can develop productive relationships with parks and recreation staff, how small experimental investments can sometimes deliver more community value than large capital projects, and why storytelling and transparency are critical tools for civic advocates.
Whether you're involved in local advocacy, parks planning, or simply trying to improve the public spaces in your community, this conversation offers practical insights into how parks can become long-term assets instead of long-term liabilities.
