Ahoy retro fans! 😄
This time I’m playing Popeye on the Commodore VIC-20 (homebrew), a very impressive fan-made version running on one of the most limited home computers of the early ’80s.
Despite the VIC-20’s tiny memory and simple graphics, this homebrew manages to capture the core Popeye gameplay in a way that feels instantly familiar.
This version requires a 32K memory expansion to run. Even with that upgrade, squeezing Popeye into a VIC-20 is a technical achievement in itself!
In this video, you’ll see:
Popeye collecting hearts to rescue Olive Oyl ❤️
Brutus chasing you relentlessly across the screen 😤
The classic spinach power-up that turns the tables 🥬
Simplified but clever graphics designed to work within the VIC-20’s strict limits 🎨
A great example of how far developers can push very limited hardware 👀
If you enjoy rare systems, homebrew games, and seeing classic arcade titles pushed onto underpowered hardware, this one is definitely worth watching.
Don’t forget to subscribe and hit the bell 🔔 I’m still on a mission to play every Popeye game ever made… and even the fan-made ones! ⚓🥬
Since this is not an official release, there was never an original box or cartridge. The cover art shown is a mockup, created by me with AI, just for fun and presentation purposes.
