Jeremy Veldman and Brian Hancock of the Memphis Astronomical Society venture to the Atacama Desert in Chile for 5 nights of Observing and Astronomy under the southern Milky Way. We stayed at the Atacama Lodge, just outside of San Pedro de Atacama and rented a telescope for 5 nights. We had the opportunity to observe under Bortle 2 skies and see celestial objects and constellations- Crux, Alpha Centauri (Rigel Kentaurus), Eta Carinae Nebula, 47 Tucanae, The Tarantula Nebula and the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds. We also had better views of Scorpius, Sagittarius and the galactic core as the Milky Way rises directly overhead in the Southern Hemisphere. We also show footage of our trip to Valle de la Luna ('Valley of the Moon') - magnificent desolation in the Atacama Desert.
