In the spring of 2010, IIHS engineers and technicians came up with a creative solution to replicate a crash scenario involving an angled impact. By fixing curved guide rails to the crash hall floor, the vehicles could be made to turn at the last moment, resulting in an angled offset crash. The tests were part of a larger series of crashes involving various barriers and car-to-car configurations that were performed during the development of the IIHS small overlap test program.
Moments in Crash Test History is a new video series from IIHS exploring interesting moments in our 65-year history of highway safety testing and research.
Fans of IIHS will recognize the star of this episode from numerous Institute videos spanning several decades. David Zuby started his career with IIHS as a research engineer thirty years ago. He served as Executive Vice President and Chief Research Officer at IIHS-HLDI until his retirement in the fall of 2024.
