The sources survey the life and work of Rabbi Abraham Abele HaLevi Gombiner, author of the book Magen Avraham, who is regarded as one of the greatest Ashkenazic halakhic authorities of the 17th century. The texts describe the course of his life from his childhood in Gombin, through his wanderings following the massacres of 1648–1649, until his service as a dayan (rabbinical judge) in Kalisz.
The main focus of the sources is his decisive halakhic contribution, especially his influential commentary on the Orach Chaim section of the Shulchan Aruch, which integrates classical halakhic rulings with the customs of Polish Jewish communities and the Kabbalah of the Ari. Extensive discussion is devoted to his unique method for calculating the “halakhic times of the day,” which measures the hours from dawn (alot ha-shachar) until nightfall (tzeit ha-kokhavim), a method that continues to appear in Jewish calendars to this day.
In addition, the sources provide a historical and cultural perspective on Jewish communal life in Gombin throughout the generations, including references to religious institutions, political movements, and other prominent rabbinic figures.
