One of the real marvels of working-class Paris was Les Halles, as the name suggests. It was dubbed "the stomach" of Paris for obvious reasons, including the size of its maze-like underground lanes that sold meat, fish, and vegetables. Emile Zola's well-known novel of the same name made it renowned.
In 1973, Les Halles was demolished because it was unable to compete in the new market economy and needed extensive repairs. The vibrant atmosphere that had been associated with the busy area of merchant stalls had vanished in 1969, when the fruit, flower, and vegetable markets had moved, leaving only the butchers at the meat markets.
