Buoyancy is said to be the most vital skill in diving. It’s hard not to agree. Our efficiency, comfort and safety depend on how naturally we are able to achieve the state of neutral buoyancy and remain in harmony with the water column.
Having spent hundreds (maybe thousands) of hours practicing I came to a point where the so called „standard diving position” had become instinctive and I needed a new push to exploit my limitations in this field.
I do agree a necessity of aquiring a skill of backkicking while being upside down with 4 or 6 cylinders or reversing wearing 10 sidemount cylinders may be highly questionable. Yes, it is ridiculous and might be dangerous but it provides me with motivation to practice even harder. I may even risk the assumption that if it had not been for this kind of drill my „standard position” buoyancy would still not feel that natural as it does now.
Upside down the perception of the brain changes dramatically; navigating is hard, keeping depth is hard, side-trimming is hard… but what I found most difficult is holding the position ina standby mode with my belly facing the surface. With two sm cylinders it is quite easy, with 4 it is a challenge, with 6 it is really demanding and with 8 or 10…I have not plucked up courage to try it yet. I don’t think I ever will.
But the message is; when I switched back to the „standard position” it seemed so easy, smooth and efficient.
I do not recommend training these acrobatic manouvers but if you do please undergo the practice with the presence of a supporting diver and remember you do it at your own risk.
