On the 19th and 20th of October 2023, Storm Babet battered Scotland. At our test site in southeast Orkney, we saw 6-7m significant wave heights. And out Blue X wave energy device rode them like a champ, continuing to generate power!
Mocean's survival strategy consists of two key aspects:
1) Its sloped nose allows it to dive through waves, shedding loads like a surfer swimming out through the surf zone.
2) We don't restrict the motion of the hinge, the design accommodating very large hinge rotations.
Both of these features make it fail safe, so it doesn't have to actively enter a survival configuration. If systems were to go down, the machine would still weather the storm.
