Indian businessman Gurdit Singh in 1914 hired a japanese ship Komagata Maru to sail it from Hong Kong, China to Vancouver British Columbia, Canada. His intentions were to defy the canadian law of continuous journey that was put in place to stop immigration into canada from India.
Back in India people were keen to enter into this new land and earn for their family Singh's intention was to help his fellow countrymen. When the ship reached Burrad Inlet in Vancouver the ship was not allowed to dock and was left stranded in the sea for almost two months. In July 1914 Komagata Maru was forced to make a return journey to India with all of its on board people. When the ship reached back in India at Budge Budge dockyard in the state of West Bengal then under the imperial rule of British India the ship was confronted by british army who accused all indians aboard of treason open fired causing severe injuries and fatalities.

ਕਾਮਾਗਾਟਾਮਾਰੂ ਜਹਾਜ਼ ਨੂੰ ਕੈਨੇਡੀਅਨ ਬੰਦਰਗਾਹ ਤੇ ਪੂਰੇ 2 ਮਹੀਨੇ ਖੜੇ ਰਹਿਣ ਤੋਂ ਬਾਅਦ 23 ਜੁਲਾਈ ਨੂੰ ਏਸ਼ੀਆ ਲਈ ਰਵਾਨਾ ਹੋਣ ਲਈ ਮਜਬੂਰ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ।
ਕਾਮਾਗਾਟਾਮਾਰੂ 27 ਸਤੰਬਰ ਨੂੰ ਕਲਕੱਤਾ ਪਹੁੰਚਿਆ। ਬੰਦਰਗਾਹ ਵਿੱਚ ਦਾਖਲ ਹੋਣ 'ਤੇ, ਜਹਾਜ਼ ਨੂੰ ਇੱਕ ਬ੍ਰਿਟਿਸ਼ ਬੰਦੂਕ ਦੀ ਕਿਸ਼ਤੀ ਦੁਆਰਾ ਰੋਕਿਆ ਗਿਆ, ਅਤੇ ਯਾਤਰੀਆਂ ਨੂੰ ਪਹਿਰੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਰੱਖਿਆ ਗਿਆ।
