To be honest, I typed these descriptions early the previous week. I wanted to give myself a lot of lead time so I can get through Pokémon Legends: Z-A at my own pace, which would necessarily be slower than it used to be. My goal was to give myself at least two weeks, but I know it takes longer than that for me to go through a Pokémon game, especially as people estimated a roughly equal length to Legends: Arceus, both in terms of going through the story and 100% completion.
And no, I am a normal person, and I did not get the game early.
Type: Double Battle
Opponent: バイオレット (Violet)
Battle Court: Cabo Poco
Music: The Bloodmoon Beast
My Pokémon: Miraidon, Iron Treads
Opponent’s Pokémon: ミライドン (Miraidon), テツノワダチ (Iron Treads)
In a mirror match like these, and there would be many of them in this event due to its rules, it becomes a 50-50 chance whether or not you go first. This is even more pronounced with this one, as it seems they had the very same strategy as me. This time, the game decided they should go first…but also gave them the much rarer chance of their move missing, so I don’t know what to make of it.
I suspect they even had the same hold item.
Type: Double Battle
Opponent: プニー (Punie)
Battle Court: Pokémon League (Interior)
Music: Terapagos 2
My Pokémon: Miraidon, Dachsbun
Opponent’s Pokémon: コライドン (Koraidon), ゲッコウガ (Greninja)
Dachsbun is here as a Koraidon counter. The thing is…I originally intended to have Koraidon on this team, and finding myself unable to put it into a Battle Box for event use, put in Miraidon in its place to have a more even physical-special split. The thing is that this Dachsbun has Yawn. That wouldn’t be a problem with Koraidon vs. Koraidon, but Miraidon’s Hadron Engine triggers Electric Terrain, which prevents Sleep, including from Yawn, rendering me unable to use the move except under specific circumstances (like if the terrain is removed or replaced with another terrain). That’s why Dachsbun was sidelined for so long and rarely used in this event.
Of course, Dachsbun just had to also go up against something with Gunk Shot, a super-effective move that even the Defense of Dachsbun can’t fully withstand. It hitting and missing is a more likely chance though, since at 80% accuracy, there’s a 36% chance of Gunk Shot being used twice and missing at least once. Those odds are too high in my book. (I had mistakenly thought it was 70%. It was increased to 80% in Generation VI, the same generation as Greninja and the Fairy-type debuted. That explains why people considered it worth putting Gunk Shot on Greninja.)
My opponent’s name is katakana for “squishy.” This being Pokémon, this most likely refers to Zygarde in Pokémon X and Y: The Series (the anime portion for Generation VI) in which Bonnie referred to Zygarde Core Forme, who accompanied Ash and the others, as “Punie-chan,” which was translated into English as “Squishy.” This is also the shiny Koraidon given out at this recent event, the one I was unable to get because the North American side of the event was botched so badly.
