When it comes to winter fly fishing it’s not always about going to a tailwater and fishing microscopic nymphs under an indicator. There are tons of other ways to catch fish in the winter time. You just have to think outside the box a little bit.
•
Some of our favorite ways to change it up when fishing in the colder months are as follows:
1. Find a sunny bend of a freestone river on a warmer day and look for midges and small mayflies hatching or fish bigger nymphs like stone flies, caddis larva or flashy attractors like worms, eggs or leeches.
•
2. Fish big streamers in deep dark pools. Slower retrieval is key. Fish have a much more limited amount of food coming to them in the winter times, so often times they will be enticed to chase down a smaller fish to get a large meal and pack on some winter calories.
•
3. Head to the nearest spring creek. The fish are a bit smaller here but are much more likely to take a juicy dry fly pattern. Often times you can get away with larger terrestrial patterns even in the winter months.
