Newport is a major station in Melbourne's western suburbs, serving as the junction for the Werribee, Williamstown and Altona Loop lines. On a nice mild winters afternoon we see a number of trains on the Werribee & Williamstown lines including Comeng & Siemens EMU's, and a handful of X'trapolis EMU's. We also see a number of Altona Loop shuttles originating and terminating here, using the sidings on the UP end of the station. We also see a Pacific National container train pass through on the freight lines.
Until the 27th August 2017 timetable change, the off-peak timetable saw Werribee (direct Newport - Laverton) and Williamstown trains ran to & from Flinders Street, while services on the Altona Loop (part of the Werribee line) ran as a shuttle between Newport & Laverton. These shuttle services began as part of the 2011 timetable change, and were highly unpopular with commuters, to the point where locals in Altona began a campaign to restore direct Flinders Street services. The shuttles were discontinued as part of the August 27th timetable change. On weekends only the Werribee line runs to and from Flinders Street, while the Williamstown line runs as a 3-car shuttle between Williamstown & Newport.
Newport station is also located outside of the Newport Railway Workshops, home to train stabling & maintenance facilities, as well as a number of heritage railway groups including Steamrail, R707 Operations & DERMPAV. To the west of the station is the freight lines, including the standard gauge line towards South Australia.
