Stolen Vehicle/Weapons – Arrest: C19-48906
On March 7, 2019, at approximately 3:55 a.m., AIR1 was patrolling over Whittier Park when a suspicious vehicle was observed stuck in snow east of a baseball diamond in the park.
Soon after, the driver was able to free the vehicle. AIR1 began to track the vehicle and noted that the vehicle matched the description of a Toyota Corolla that had been stolen a week earlier from the Tyndall Park area.
A North District General Patrol unit was directed to the vehicle and ran the licence place as it travelled on Powers Street. The vehicle was confirmed to be stolen and officers attempted a traffic stop, however the vehicle refused to stop and began to speed up.
Police units on the ground dropped back while AIR1 continued to track the vehicle. A tire deflation device (“Stop Stick”) was successfully deployed in the area of Main Street and Higgins Avenue which caused the vehicle’s tires to slowly deflate.
The vehicle eventually came to a stop after it got stuck at the entrance of a back lane near Cumberland Avenue and Kennedy Street. The male driver refused to exit the vehicle and continued to try to drive away. He was eventually extracted from the vehicle through the driver’s side window and safely taken into custody by Central District General Patrol members and the K9 Unit.
Inside the vehicle, officers found an 18-inch machete, break-in tools, a .270 Winchester ammunition cartridge and a small amount of methamphetamine.
It was later discovered that the male driver had been involved in a home invasion approximately 12 hours earlier in the Spence area where a machete was produced and two victims were injured. The investigation into that incident is still on-going.
