Synopsis: We believe that there is a historical disconnect, or epistemological dissonance, on how continental Africans, Afro-Caribbean, Afro-Brazilians and African-Americans (black people) experience the legacy of colonization. As we go through this process of global decolonization, we must empower black youth and young adults to build sustainable systems and lifestyles. Our research posits that all black youth and young adults in the African Diaspora acquire the knowledge and skills to promote sustainable community development. To that end, an applied anthropology curriculum needs to be developed to inform our global communities.
As applied anthropologists working in education, we are concerned with how black youth and young adults learn about themselves, their communities, the intersection of shared legacies as a lived experience, and what educational institutions know about that legacy. Using mixed methods and digital tools, we will create a science and art-based global curriculum that dismantles cultural boundaries and promotes sustainable development through literary arts, visual expressions, and scientific analysis.
Research supports that science and art heal and transform marginalized communities and those affected by traumatic experiences. Our work endeavors to 1) repair historical injustices among black people of the African Diaspora, 2) improve the appreciation of cultural diversity within the African Diaspora by gaining mutual respect for black communities and their struggles due to colonization, and 3) increase the awareness from an etic perspective, the contributions of black communities across the world in creating sustainable environments, relationships and lifestyles.
