Dinosaur footprints preserved in the rock platform on Bexhill Beach in East Sussex reveal a landscape that existed around 135 million years ago during the Early Cretaceous period. These tracks were likely made by an ornithopod dinosaur similar to Iguanodon, walking across soft mud on a warm river floodplain that once covered this part of Sussex.
In this short film we explore the dinosaur footprints exposed along the Bexhill foreshore, including the difference between true footprint impressions and natural casts, where the original track filled with sediment and hardened into rock before the surrounding layers eroded away.
These footprints are preserved within the Wealden Group rocks, which formed from rivers, lakes and floodplains during the Early Cretaceous. The same rock formations across Sussex and the Isle of Wight have produced some of the most famous dinosaur discoveries in Britain.
Over millions of years these ancient surfaces were buried and protected within the rock layers. Coastal erosion along the Sussex coastline is now gradually exposing them again, occasionally revealing dinosaur tracks that have not seen daylight since the age of dinosaurs.
