An interview with Richard Gergel for the Julian Bond Oral History Project, sponsored by the School of Public Affairs at American University. The project documents the professional rise of Julian Bond from 1960-1968, focusing on his early years in the Atlanta student movement, his work as a founding member of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC), and his rise to national prominence. Conducted by Gregg Ivers, Professor of Government and Project Director, in Charleston, S.C. on November 3rd, 2021.

Richard Gergel is the author of the book, Unexampled Courage: The Blinding of Issac Woodard and the Awakening of President Harry S. Truman and Judge J. Waties Waring (2019). Judge Gergel talks about his personal and family background, how he developed his interest in the Issac Woodard story, and his conversation with Julian Bond about the significance of this historical moment for the Southern civil rights movement. Since 2010, Mr. Gergel has served as a United States District Court Judge for the District of South Carolina, having been appointed by President Barack Obama.
