El Salvador is one of the latest countries in Latin America
and the Caribbean to experience a reformist revolution.
In October 1979 moderate military officers led a coup which
overthrew the politically discredited General Romero and his
government, and they have been joined by several of the political
parties. The radical Archbishop Romero, no relation of the
ousted President, has also welcomed the coup, but Leftists
grouped in the Popular Revolutionary Bloc, say the new leaders
have not gone far enough: they seek a revolutionary marxist
government. So the protests and deaths have continued, and
foreign investors and tourists have virtually disappeared from
the scene because of the uncertain future. This report covers
the turbulent events since May and gives some colourful and
highly pictorial background coverage of the country itself.
