Описание:
Brian Robeson, the thirteen year old hero of Hatchet started off a bit of a useless, emotionally broken lump. Once thrown into a desperate situation, he must learn to survive using all the resources he finds in nature, his memories, and with creativity all on his own. You will root for Brian and find yourself wondering if you could survive his challenges. Coincidently, my son is teaching a wilderness survival bootcamp this weekend. This reading honors him and is a suggestion by J.R.Z. +

Lesson Ideas
Writing Activity: Capturing Emotional Survival
In this writing activity, you will practice using figurative language techniques similar to Gary Paulsen's style in "Hatchet" to express intense emotions. Choose a challenging situation you've faced (like being lost, facing a difficult test, or dealing with a conflict) and write two paragraphs that capture your emotional state during that time.
Your writing should include:
Short, choppy sentences that show rushed or panicked thoughts
Repetitive phrases to create rhythm and emphasis
Unfiltered thoughts that show your raw emotions
Descriptive language that helps readers feel what you felt
Example structure: "Heart pounding. Can't think straight. The test paper sits there, mocking me. Question after question. Word after word. Nothing makes sense. The clock ticks louder, louder, LOUDER. My pencil shakes - no, my whole hand shakes. Must focus. Have to focus. But my mind races everywhere, nowhere, everywhere again..."
Remember: The goal isn't to write perfectly structured sentences. Instead, let your writing reflect the natural flow of thoughts and emotions as they occurred in that moment. Your sentences can be incomplete or repetitive if that helps capture how you felt.
ELA and Health Collaboration
Create a short emergency action plan for one of these health emergencies: heart attack, diabetes, allergies, hypothermia, other situations by teacher approval.
Include:
• Three warning signs to watch for
• Steps you would take to help
• Who you would contact
• What information you would give to emergency responders
May be in the form of a video, podcast, or slides
ELA and Art Collaboration
No graphic novel for Hatchet exists. Choose a dramatic scene from the book and interpret it in Graphic Novel /Cartoon format. You may ask AI generators for brainstorming if you need help, but you must write the prompt used, AI tool, and the art must be then made by hand.
Team Building (Communication, Skills, Problem Solving) Survival Project & Game
Choose a difficult location like the Himalayan Mountains. Research true life emergencies and share some ways people survived. Have students do a similar research project. After presentations, Create a "What if" survival game.
Includes:
• Resource list
• A handicap for each team randomly chosen (example: a twisted ankle)
• Create several emergency situations and ask each team to respond
• Assign points based on accuracy, efficiency, likely positive outcome
Present the winning team with a Homework pass or Extra credit on research project
